Jackie Garrick, Moises Montalvo, Rye Barcott, Zachary Iscol (speaking in personal capacity), Moderator: Lucy BustamanteBrooklyn Brewery: Tasting Room

Moderated by news anchor Lucy Bustamante, this panel promises a dynamic discussion on the unique role veterans play in shaping and covering politics. Panelists will explore the valuable perspectives military veterans bring to political leadership and political journalism, offering insights into how their experiences enhance understanding of complex political issues. Whether serving in office or reporting on the latest developments, veterans contribute essential viewpoints that enrich both governance and media coverage while also building trust in these critical institutions.

Brought to you by the With Honor Institute.

Jackie Garrick is a policy and program expert and the founder of Whistleblowers of America with 30 years of service to the military/veteran community. She was a political appointee at the Pentagon for eight years, setting up personnel programs for Wounded Warriors and the Defense Suicide Prevention Office. She established a crisis hotline in Afghanistan and later investigated issues related to diversity and inclusion and NO FEAR Act violations. While working for the Defense Department that Ms. Garrick blew the whistle on fraud, waste, and abuse and suffered retaliation. Before that, she worked for the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Disability Assistance, and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee, drafting legislation to assist disabled veterans and their families. Ms. Garrick is a former Army social work officer. She has used her clinical knowledge to inform her advocacy and intervention work with The American Legion as the Deputy Director for Health Care and then with the Veterans" Disability Benefits Commission. She has several prestigious awards, including the Lincoln Award and a Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service. Ms. Garrick has published books and several articles and has appeared worldwide as a health and resilience expert. She founded the FAR Group after 9/11 and continues to offer consulting services. Her MSW is from Temple University.

Moises Montalvo is a U.S. Army veteran, former human intelligence collector, and Arabic linguist who graduated from the prestigious Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, CA. After serving in the military, Moises has continued to make a difference by organizing with Common Defense and advocating for a wide range of issues, including racial justice, protecting our democracy, the environment, and poverty. He was also part of the first Climate Change cohort of the Veterans Organizing Institute and recently completed their first-ever train-the-trainer program. Moises has now joined the facilitation team at the Veterans Organizing Institute, helping to train and inspire the next generation of veteran organizers. Through his dedication and leadership, Moises has become a respected voice in the veteran community and an example of what it means to serve your country in and out of uniform.

Rye Barcott is co-founder and CEO of With Honor, a cross-partisan political organization led by veterans focused on promoting and advancing principled veteran leadership to reduce polarization in the U.S. Congress. Previously, he co-founded and led the clean energy investment firm Double Time Capital, and co-founded the non-governmental public health organization CFK in Nairobi, Kenya. His memoir, It Happened on the Way to War, juxtaposes military service and social entrepreneurship. Barcott serves on the boards of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation, NDI, and the U.S. Institute for Peace. He chairs the board of CFK.

Zach Iscol serves as New York City’s commissioner of emergency management. (Iscol is speaking at this MVJ event in his personal capacity as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.) A crisis tested leader, he has led in settings ranging from combat operations in Iraq to the frontlines of COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Sandy here in New York. His experience includes building a pioneering nonprofit mental healthcare provider, leading one of the premiere military journalism outlets, and serving as a strong advocate for immigrants and underserved communities. Two of his former commanding officers cited him as the officer they would personally select to lead their sons into combat.
As a Marine, he served two tours in Iraq and on other assignments throughout Africa and the Middle East. During his second tour of duty, he led a combined unit of US Marines and Iraq soldiers in some of the heaviest fighting of the Iraq War during the Second Battle of Fallujah, where he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. He later helped build many of the components of the Marine Corps' first special operations command and deployed on one of the first MARSOC teams to deploy overseas.
Over the past decade, Iscol has built and led businesses and a nonprofit mental healthcare provider, the Headstrong Project. The Headstrong Project now cares for over 1,000 veterans a week in 30+ cities and counting to provide world-class, cost, and bureaucracy free mental healthcare veterans and service members need to recover from hidden wounds and get back to the best versions of themselves.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, Iscol led over 40 federal, state, and city agencies as the deputy director of Joint New York Medical Station, one of the largest and only successful COVID field hospitals in the country.
A 2001 graduate of Cornell University, he was the youngest recipient of Phillips Exeter Academy's John Phillips Award, a member of the 2013 Team USA for USA Triathlon, and a grand marshal of the 2019 New York City Veterans Day Parade. In 2007, while still on active duty, he testified before the United States Senate about the need to protect Iraqi refugees, especially translators and others who put their lives in danger to help US forces.

Lucy Bustamante is a 4-time Emmy-winning morning news anchor and journalist.  Fluent in Spanish, Lucy is the daughter of Cuban refugees who migrated to the U.S. in 1969. She was born and raised in New Orleans in a home that only spoke Spanish. The skills she learned as a child, of translating between Spanish and English as a first generation American, formed the foundation for her role as a bilingual news anchor.
While at NBC10 in Philadelphia, Lucy was a pivotal member of the team that created NBC’s “American Vets” reporting series, in which she and other journalists around the country covered issues impacting veterans in the states and abroad. In November 2022, she co-hosted and co-produced American Vets: Beyond the Battlefield, an NBCNewsNow Veterans Day streaming special that highlighted the issues veterans with PTSD face.
